In-Home vs. Center-Based ABA: How to Choose
By Mercy Plus Clinical Team, BCBA, RN · May 26, 2026
One of the first questions families ask about ABA is where therapy should happen. Both settings work — here's how to think it through.
What are the benefits of center-based ABA?
- A structured environment designed for learning and routines
- Access to peers for social goals
- Dedicated therapy space and materials
- Often a good fit for early, intensive programs
What are the benefits of in-home ABA?
- Skills are taught where they're actually used — at home
- Better generalization to family routines, mealtimes, and siblings
- Convenient for families with transportation or scheduling constraints
- Caregivers can be coached in real time
How do I choose between them?
Consider your child's goals (social skills often benefit from a center; daily-living skills often benefit from home), their age and stamina, and your family's logistics. Many families do both — and your BCBA will recommend a mix based on the evaluation.
Can we change settings later?
Yes. ABA plans are reviewed regularly and adjust as your child grows. The setting can shift as goals change.
